How Books Happen - An Introduction
So I have this theory that books find us — that they are accomplices rather than inanimate objects in our life-long learning adventure. I’ve come to think this way because the books that have really shifted my way of looking at reality, the ones that have changed my life, have made their way to me in often serendipitously, synchronistically, and yes even magically, movie-scene-worthy ways.
Of course there are the times that I was desperate for inspiration or hope, or searching for a teacher, and the perfect book on just-that-subject was given to me unceremoniously by someone unbeknownst of my quest. But more interestingly were the times that I wasn’t searching and yet a
book made itself known. I find these origin stories to be pointedly poignant prologues to the knowledge gifted to me through the titles they proceed.
Never-heard-of-ems have roared at me from the table of a used-book seller or box-o-freebies on a stoop, only to sit on my shelf for years before jumping out at me to be read at precisely the moment in time that their contents would reverberate through my existence and make my complicated life make sense. Another title, that completely and utterly turned my perception of the world upside down, was found on my dad’s bookshelf on a quiet rainy day at home — but my dad, to this day, has no idea where the book came from.
So I’m starting #HowBooksHappen, a vessel to collect the stories of how inspiring people found the titles that have inspired them, so that they can in turn inspire others.
Stay tuned for Episode 1 coming later this week!
